5 Mobile Apps for Engineers

5 Mobile Apps for Engineers 5 Mobile Apps for Engineers 5 Mobile Apps for EngineersConsider this scenario You are in the field and you need to obtain the mechanical properties for a given geometric section. If you had a laptop, you would boot it, launch a program, and get the results in a couple of minutes. Instead, you take out your smartphone and launch an app. The app takes between oneand two seconds to launch and has the specific options you need to quickly complete this task. You just saved a few minutes to solve a simple problem with just the tap of a finger. The computing power, ease-of-use, and convenience of unmatched portability are the key reasons why thousands of smartphone users download apps on their phones daily. A mobile app is in a broader sense a software program, but its mora dedicated and task-oriented than an intensive app for a computer, says Mike Barone, senior design engineer for Hamilton Sundstrand, a division of UTC.Apps are specific and fit in perfectly with the tasks engineers do daily, says Barone. There are several apps available for electrical and civil engineers, but there arent as many for mechanical engineers. According to Barone, The demand is there but its unrecognized yet.Mechanical Engineering Apps on iPhoneCounting only the two major platforms in the mobile space today, iOS and Android, there are more than 500,000 apps available these days, says David Homes, director of technology at IPROBLUE Tech, which develops mobile engineering solutions. This is a market that pretty much just started in July 2008, when Apple launched the App Store and made it an accessible platform for developers to self-publish there. There are, however, fewer mechanical-engineering-related apps on the market and the ones that are currently available offer formulas, calculations, or basic reference information. The following are five examples of engineering apps for the iPhoneA part of MultiEducators iPhone Formulator Line, this app contains over 300 m echanical engineering formulas.Mechanical Engineer A part of MultiEducators iPhone Formulator Line, the app contains over 300 mechanical engineering formulas. There are over 300 additional conversion formulas in the program as well as 70 area formulas. Major areas covered in the program include bearings, belts, boilers, brakes, clutches, elevators, gears, fluid power, heat transfer, internal combustion, kinetic energy, metalworking, plates, plumbs, power plants, refrigeration, shafts springs, and vehicle drive.AutoCAD WS has a number of features previously found only in AutoCADs desktop design software.AutoCAD WS Autodesks web and mobile app lets you view, edit, and share DWG drawings through a web browser or mobile device. AutoCAD WS has a number of features previously found only in AutoCADs desktop design software.Cross Sections Calc IPROBLUE Techs parametric section and member calculator computes 21 geometric and mechanical properties for 23 commonly used sections used in beam an d column design as well as general mechanics of materials.Mech Ref. This app is a reference for all things mechanical. Currently the app offers exerzieren and tap sizes, fastener clearance holes, sheet metal gauge tables, and math and physics reference.Mechanics Basics This app contains a large selection of mechanics laws, equations, tables, and reference material that engineers may find useful during their work. Most apps range from free, free but ad-supported, and paid, anywhere from $.99 to $19.99, informs Homes. I particularly have never paid more than $9.99 for an app. But then again this is a matter of what functionality they provide and whether or not you are willing to pay for it.The Future of Engineering AppsBy 2015, the mobile app market is expected to be worth $25 billion dollars (up from $6.8 billion in 2010), according to a report by TechCrunch. With the new tablets on the market, the rate of new mobile application is expected to increase big time during 2011, says Homes .Barone hopes to see more mechanical-engineering-focused apps in the coming years. There are several potential apps for mechanical engineers Its almost every chapter of every engineering book that we study. Each chapter goes through the theory, derivation, and derived formula. Engineers understand the theory and want the formula and derivation, he says. Pressure vessel design could be a good fit for a mobile app with a series of sub apps for specific types of vessels, adds Barone.A robust notification ordnungsprinzip for updates is critical for all engineering apps. Its extremely important that auto update info for critical issues that could affect the results of these apps should have a robust notification system to the user. We dont want to be designing a space vehicle and get the wrong structure because of a flaw in an app, highlights Barone.Eventually, the future of mechanical engineering apps rests in the hands of the users as it will depend on how motivated they are to use the apps, says Barone. The younger engineers having these tools will be more productive and will enjoy their jobs more. I believe a happier workforce is a more productive workforce. Apps are an enabler to make productivity and fun to be synergistic. The future of mechanical engineering apps rests in the hands of the users as it will depend on how motivated they are to use the apps.Mike Barone, senior design engineer, Hamilton Sundstrand, a division of UTC.

If you use social media like this, you may be a psychopathIf you use social media like this, you may be a psychopathAnother day, another study that may indicate whether you are a psychopath or not. According to one research, it could come down to the way you use social media.Victoria University psychology Professor Marc Wilson found that people with psychopathic tendencies tend to spend more time on social networks. Specifically, they tend to deutsche bundespost more highly edited selfies in an attempt to network and get more ambitious and coveted roles. The forensic psychologist that ran the study said psychopaths tend to move up the corporate ladder swiftly because hiring managers tend to focus more on skills over personality traits.Forpsychopaths, it corporate success is a game and they dont mind if they violate morals. It is about getting where they want in the company and having dominance over others, he told The Telegraph.Wilson noted thatThere are a number of case studies and Enron, the energy company in the US, which was categorized before its decline by psychopathic behavior. Learn About Nautical Miles and Statute Miles

Learn About Nautical Miles and Statute MilesLearn About Nautical Miles and Statute MilesThe Nautical Mile, as a unit of measurement, was first defined as an international voreingestelltin Monaco in 1929 at the First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference. Prior to that, there was no international voreingestellt for measuring distances either while traveling in water or, or more importantly, over water. The United States did not adopt the Nautical Mile as its standardmeasurement in 1929, but did jump on board in 1954 and now recognizes this internationally used standard. (A nautical mile, logically based on the circumference of the earth, is equal to one minute of latitude and is slightly longer than a statute mile which is a land measurement.) Nautical Miles Versus Statute Miles In the worldof aviation, the standard way to measure distance is the nautical mile. However, the word standard opens the door for deviation from the norm. One exception isusing the statutemile (SM) as opposed to the nautical mile (NM) with regards to the VFR visibility requirements, which all pilots know refer to the basic VFR weather minimum (14 CFR 91.155), which is specific to different types of airspace and altitudes. And, unless you are just getting started, you are familiar with the term VFR which stands for Visual Flight Rules. The VFR weather minimum boils down to the rationale for needing greater visibility (and more distance from clouds) when flying above 10,000MSL (or, mean sea level, which measures aviation altitude) because pilots need more time to see (and avoid) aircraft that may popin and out of clouds. Cloud Clearance is Another Exception Another exception to the rule that the nautical mile is the iron-clad generisch measure and is the measurement regarding cloud clearance, that also employs statute miles (SM) rather than nautical miles (NM). A precise cloud clearance requirement is necessary because its hard to know if that scene out of the hangar d oor measures up with true meteorological conditions, or, if the scene out of a pilots windscreen measures up, for that matter. Nevertheless, here are the definitions of both nautical miles and statute miles, along with a few easy conversions. Distance Measurements Statute Mile 1 SM 1,609 meters1 SM 5,280 feet1 SM .869 NM Nautical Mile One nautical mile (NM)as defined by the NOAA as A unit of distance used in marine navigation and marine forecasts. It is equal to 1.15 statute miles or 1,852 meters. It is also the length of 1 minute of latitude. 1 NM 1,852 meters1NM 6,076 feet1NM 1.151 statute miles In the world of aviation, distance is generally measured in nautical miles, with the exception of visibility, which is usually stated or forecasted in statute miles. Speed Measurements When exploring nautical miles, its worth noting the difference with often-used terms such MPH and knots. MPH In statute miles, speed measurements are given in miles per hour, the same as in veh icles.Knot The standard speed measurement in aviation is the knot. One knot is equal to one nautical mile per hour. Airspeed indicators on aircraft are calibrated in knots.

Setting Online Boundaries In Your Job Search

Setting Online Boundaries In Your Job SearchSetting Online Boundaries In Your Job SearchOne of my clients was recently invited by a recruiter tobecome a Friend on Facebook. Thisclient had hoped to keep her Facebook personal and use LinkedIn forprofessional contacts. At the sametime, she wanted to develop the relationship with this recruiter and worriedthat Ignoring the request might be viewed as a rebuff. In the end, she contacted the recruitervia email to let her know that she wanted to connect via LinkedIn instead. Score one for boundaries. Many people keep my clients ansprechbar boundary Facebook for personal LinkedIn forprofessional. When I recruited, Ideliberately chose LinkedIn for my research and sourcing because I didnt wantto risk crossing that common boundary. Its the same reason I tried a candidates work number first beforecalling home or cell.If you would like to keep a personal and professional onlineboundary, then be consistent. Keepyour professional research and inquirie s in one network and personalseparate. Realize, however, thatnot everyone feels this way, so you may have people reach out to you in waysyou didnt intend (as with my client and the recruiter), and you want to dealwith these inquiries consistently. You will want to keep your personal networking profile as private aspossible if you indeed do not want it used for professional inquiries.Another consideration is that the line between personal ourprofessional lives is often blurry, especially when we are in job search mode(and who isnt these days, even if you are employed). You want people to be able to find you. Your friends are most likely to thinkabout you and advocate for you. Therefore, your personal network may be your strongest professionalleads. Before you delineatecompletely between personal and professional, know that what you gain inboundaries, you may lose in opportunities.A compromise could be to toggle between your personal andprofessional networks of choice and make sure that everyone that you would liketo be in both networks are. Youwill need to invite one to the other, and make sure you update each site withthe relevant information. This ismore work and requires coordination. However, it ensures that you maintain the boundaries, but still reap thebenefits of integrating your personal and professional lives.Caroline Ceniza-Levine is co-founder of SixFigureStart(www.sixfigurestart.com), a careercoaching firm comprised of former Fortune 500 recruiters.

The True Story About How to Put References on a Resume That the Experts Dont Want You to Know

The True Story About How to Put References on a Resume That the Experts Dont Want You to Know The How to Put References on a Resume Trap If at all possible, select folks who can speak to your abilities and qualifications as they relate to the job that youre applying for. You would be a lot wiser to include things like a modest additional job history or an extra skill collection. If its possible, select references that are in a position to talk specifically about your qualifications for the job for which youre applying. The references on resume have to be applicable to the job youre applying for. References will be finished on you without your ever being aware of it. Select references that are legitimate. Choosing references ought to be a careful course of action. If you are requested to send references, develop a distinct document rather than placing them directly on your resume. Youre also likely to need to understand how to choose and request references. If you dont are directly asked for just a couple of references, plan to include a minimum of three references. Theres simply no reason why you need to ever include references on a resume. The Fundamentals of How to Put References on a Resume Revealed You would rather not incorporate an schmelzglas address with a typo or a telephone number thats missing a digit. Include name, address, contact number, and e-mail address, along with a fax number, in case you have one. Prior to making a resume reference page or sending the contact information of anyone to a prospective employer, its essential to ask permission from each one of the referencesyou would love to use. When you first consider somebody to use as a reference for a work program, you must ask their permission not just to use and give out their contact info but directly if theyd be in a position to supply a reference as some folks may prefer not to. How to Put References on a Resume - the Story References form an essential portion of y our job application. They can boost your job application in a big way. Improve your career prospects with green skills

Improve your career prospects with green skills Improve your career prospects with green skillsPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie ChunWith talk of climate change and carbon taxes on everyones lips, awareness of green issues is at an all-time high. But look around your workplace are green practices an integrated part of your organisations culture? And have you ever thought about what more you could be doing to help further your sustainability practices?Green-skilling has emerged as one of the top workplace trends for the coming year, and this trend is sure to continue. The implementation of green workplace practices is not only good for the environment, but is becoming an increasingly powerful way of attracting potential employees, clients and investors. Sustainability is the way of the future and both individuals and businesses will have to start thinking and acting green.Sharan Burrow, Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) President, says, Sustainability will become central to business strategy. Integrating sustainability into all aspects of their business into the products they make, into their operations and processes, and into their accounting practices, they businesses will increasingly demand green skills and knowledge. However, despite increasing awareness of environmental issues, a Green Steps Australian Workplaces Survey has found that most Australian workplaces offer no green skills or sustainability training for staff, do not review staff on environmental performance or address sustainability issues when hiring. Green Steps Manager fruchtfleisch Boulet says, This is not good news. The workplace is the frontline when it comes to sustainability it is as important as what we do in our homes. If Australia wants to save water, cut carbon emissions and reduce our impact we need employees everywhere to be green skilled.Employers want green candidatesSustainability needs to be factored into businesses at all levels and be part of overall performa nce management practices. What we do at home accounts for only 20 to 30 per cent of Australias energy and water consumption and waste production, which means we can do far more to combat our environmental challenges by addressing sustainability within the workplace, and this requires greater knowledge and skills from employees everywhere, says Boulet. Despite the lack of workplace training, 90 per cent of Australian employers still consider themselves to be environmentally aware and 71 per cent said they would favour green-skilled candidates when hiring. Employers want green skills but arent investing in this capacity in their workforce. Rather than simply relying on a small number of sustainability specialists, Green Steps wants to see a workforce with ordinary everyday workers who go about their everyday jobs knowing how sustainability fits into this and what they could do to reduce their impact. We call them green implants. Were going to need millions of them if we are to mak e a difference, says Boulet. How you can acquire green skillsGaining green skills means going beyond simply wiedergewinnung paper and turning off your computer at night. In most cases, specific green training is required. Green Steps is a hands-on sustainability education and leadership program developed by the Monash Sustainability Institute to equip participants with the skills to drive environmentally sustainable practices within organisations and the wider community. Its Green Steps Work intensive training program teaches non-specialists practical skills in energy, waste and water auditing, implementing carbon reduction and waste minimisation action plans, and instigating staff behaviour change programs. We need green skills to be a part of everyones CV, says Boulet.Green careersGreen jobs are growing faster than any other sector according to a recent Manpower report, and some experts believe that a critical shortage of green skills is looming. According to Sharan Burrow, green skills shortages already exist and the pace of green job creation will only accelerate in coming years. We need to prepare new workers for the skill requirements inherent in green jobs. We also need to ensure that our transition to a greener more sustainable economy is not stymied by a shortage of adequately trained workers, says Burrow. For those wishing to explore a career in this dynamic and growing field, or industry professionals wishing to further their careers through the development of green expertise. Five things every organisation can do to improve their environmental performanceConduct a basic environmental assessment. What is your organisations energy and water use and waste production?Reduce energy use by encouraging staff to turn computers off at the end of the day.Reduce waste by taking away land-fill bins under desks and setting up central waste and regenerierung stations in staff rooms or kitchens.Cut paper use in half by setting double-sided printing and photocopying as a default.Build the capacity and green skills of staff by providing green skills training.
